What is PCI Express? A Layman's Guide to High Speed PCI-E Technology-Best Computer Online Store Houston Buy Discount Prices Texas-Directron.com: "Why should I care about PCI-Express?

There are two main reasons to care about PCI-Express: 1) PCI is now an old standard dating back to the early 90's and no longer fits our needs in terms of speed/performance. 2) AGP also is in a similar position as PCI now, and chipset manufacturers are killing AGP motherboard support in favor of the much faster PCI Express interface. This means you are looking at a forced transition in the graphic sector, thus you really don't have a lot of choice in the coming years. At this point (August, 2008) choices in AGP cards represent less than 5% of available cards, and the latest chipsets can not be found in the form factor."

Aha, so the whole PCI express thing is all about the graphics or video card. I am sure this may be important, but not to me right now. - SandCloud

Right now I am following a set of specifications which required three Gigabyte Lan ports (NIC) on one computer and two on the other. Also I bought this Sata Card which effectively can add three extra Sata ports, even though it has it's own RAID, I don't need it for that feature. I might however take up one of the two PCI slots on my motherboard, so then I wont be able to use my AMD quad 4 840 system with 8 Gigabytes of RAM as my hypervisor.

So if I am going to swap out the motherboard, I want to do it before I install the Operating System which I was thinking to load Windows 7 1st and then Unbuntu.

Ultimately the computer will be made into a server (hence wanting such high speed lots of Ram and many Sata ports, or a hypervisor, still needing a quad processor with 3 Gigabyte (NIC) Lan cards.
